Well, you could probably find stats from a lot of different sources. One news report I watched the other day said the average student loan debt for an undergraduate degree is $20,000. Can I ask why you're considering a private lender? Federal loans have a cap on how high the interest rate can go. There are also "forgiveness" programs available.
Private Lender's are tricky. The 'recommended' lender that the school goes through might be crappy but give the school money to recommend them. From experience federal loans are pretty good but the only difference is that you need to pay interest and it's hard to do when you're a full time student.
All in all be careful before choosing a loan.

You should always go for federal subsidized loans like the subsidized stafford loans. These will charge you less interest than private lenders.
