the key word to look for is subsidized. Generally a loan calling it self a federal subsidized student loan has deferred interest until after you graduate.

What they mean is this: While you are in school, interest doesn't accumulate or go up or down. If you graduate, you have 6 months before starting to pay back. If you quit school, you have 6 months to start payments, either way, they will get their money back.
All federal Stafford loans allow you to defer payments until after you graduate. Subsidized Stafford loans are need-based, and the government pays the interest on these loans while you are in school, during a six-month grace period immediately preceding repayment, and during authorized deferment.
Unsubsidized Stafford loans are not need-based, and you are responsible for all of the interest that accrues on the loan, including while you are in school, although you don't start paying it back until 6 mo after graduation.
Many private student loans (those that come from banks and are not backed by the gov) have an option to defer payment until after graduation, but read the fine print carefully, because many of them charge a fee for that option.
Make sure you max out all your federal loans before you go for private loans.
