You don't say why you pulled out of school in the first place, so it is harder to give you advice. However, the answer may be in your local community college. If you had too much on your plate before, community colleges usually have open admissions policies. In other words, if you are a high school graduate--which you must be--you can be admitted to a community college. That will give you some credits, will qualify you as a full time student (if you take enough courses) and will get you back on your feet academically.
Of course, community colleges are only 2-year programs, but the courses can be transferred to a 4-year college. In most states, the major state universities give you full credit for your community college courses. Just make sure you take "real" academic subjects, like you would in a 4-year college, and you will be fine.
The best part of all is that community colleges are much less expensive than other colleges, so that will help a lot financially.
