Is their really such a thing as free government grants?

Question:And if so, where can I find them? Im scared of getting ripped off. I am a minority and married with two children. can I qualify for grants for school?

Answers:
Yes. You apply annually using the FAFSA. You can get a paper form from you school if you are concerned about being scammed. The correct website is www.fafsa.gov; There are a couple imposter websites so always make sure you are at the correct one.

You probably can get some scholarships from your school, so definately apply by their deadline, and you can go to the library and get a scholarship book and start writing some essays too.

Remember, you should never have to pay for finacial aid or scholarships. You have to pay back loans, but other than that you should be giving no money. There is never a fee to apply or recieve any kind of aid.
Being an average middle class white male who just graduated from college with 19k in loans...I would have to say that I am envious of you.

There are almost unlimited scholorships for minorities. The fact that you are a mother and going to school opens up your search to even more scholorships. Depending on your income level, you may qualify for the fedral grants. The Pell Grant is the most common.

The first thing you want to do is go to www.fafsa.gov and fill out the form. This qualifies you to receive ANY financial aid.

Best bit of advice I can give you is to go talk with a financial advisor at your school. They will tell you EVERYTHING you need to know and more, and probably have you entered in a dozen by the time you walk out the door. You can never have too much scholorship money. In fact, if you recieve more than school costs, you actually get to keep whatever is left.
Oh please, toledoengineer3. I'm a poor minority leaving school with twice as much loans as you. Please stop promoting the myth that it is somehow much easier to get financial aid that doesn't need to be paid back as a minority.

Anyway, to answer the question, yes there are federal grants, most commonly the Pell Grant. The Pell Grant is usually reserved for the very needy, and you sound like a person who would qualify. Just fill out a Fafsa and your school will compile a financial aid package for you. Then you will know if you received the free grant. Also, be sure to ask about scholarships and such at school. Good luck.
