What are my options for money for school?

Question:I have to turn in my payment for first semester by August 20th and my mother just informed me that she refuses to sign the parent PLUS loan she was supposed to sign. I'm going into my freshman year at an expensive private school and I have most of my expenses covered but I need about 3600 dollars more for the first semester. I have already looked into getting a private loan on my own but I don't have enough established credit, and I really don't have any options for a cosigner. I need a solution that will get me to school in time because everything else is set any suggestions would be great. And by the way as far as my parents helping me goes that's not really an option one is unreliable and the other has already made enough of an impact on my future in the last couple of days. Thanks in advance for the help.

Answers:
If your mom (or dad) applies for the PLUS and is denied, then you would be eligible for an additional federal unsubsibsidized loan in your name for up to $4000 per year. If the PLUS is approved, your parent can always decline to sign the prom note or call and cancel the loan with the school or the lender. But you will not be eligible for the additional unsub loan without the PLUS denial so check if either parent is willing to do at least that much.

If you are really having trouble coming up with additional funds, try talking to the admissions office. Tell them how much you want to come to their school and that if you just had a little more money you could afford to come. Sometimes, if the student is a very high quality student (high ACT and GPA), they will offer a couple thousand to help you get in to school.

You might also try talking to local businesses and community organizations to see if there are scholarships available. And of course, set up a meeting with the financial aid office to see if there is anything else for which you are qualified or that can be done to increase your aid eligibility.

Hope I helped. Good luck.
