Work study is any job you can get at your school and the money they pay you (from the government) is part of your financial aid package, usually a little over minimum wage so that you can have some kind of income while you're in school to cover little expenses like when you need to run errands or something. You can spend the money however you like. It's not a lot, but it does remind you that you need to be smart with your money.

The kinds of jobs depend on what your school offers. When I was in college, my work study jobs ranged from working front desks of the library or some student centers, but my most consistent one was working at the registrar's office. You can get jobs that are mostly admin/clerical or really kick back jobs where you can make money and do your homework at the same time! It really depends - at the beginning of the year they should have some kind of job fair for work study students so they know what is available to them.

Ask around and do it ASAP before they fill up. Good luck!
The previous posts give excellent examples of work study positions. None of them are hard labor. If your department has a position open, you can work there. Or maybe in the campus business office. You will make copies, run errands, answer phones, help students, etc.

The jobs are designed to allow you to work during your free time on campus.
For example: Mon 12-2p, Tue 9-10:30, Thur 10-12, Fri 2-5p
You can also find employment off campus for work study. Talk your school and they may have information on companies that participate in the work study program.
