Is double majoring in International Relations and Japanese the ideal path for me?

Question:My university doesn't specifically have business as a major, and anything close to it is too comprehensive to double major with Japanese, so I wanted to see if I double majored with Japanese and International Relations, would I be successful in the business world?

I probably would, I hope. But I wanted to see if anyone has had personal experiences or advice of actually making these two majors into degrees and also having a successful life/career.

Being both a person in business and having a great knowledge in Japanese, I hope to be successful and also even translate written documents and other things on the side. So I hope I'm choosing the right path.

Any help and advice would be great. Thanks a lot!

I don't see anything wrong with majoring in Japanese and IR.

If you want to get into translation, you might want to take some business/technical writing classes, if offered.

You might want to consider going to translation/interpretation school as well. Such programs aren't easy to find in the states, but you might be able to tap into this if you study abroad.

Which brings me to this- study abroad. Spend at least a year in Japan during your undergraduate years, ok?

A lot of the tech writing jobs are for people who have specific experience in the field where they're translating, usually law, engineering, medicine, specific stuff like that.

So if you're leaning towards business/translation/Japanese, it might not be a bad idea to look at doing some pre-law stuff, maybe go to paralegal school or law school after your BA.
seems like a great path. Go for it. You get to travel the world and many more. Good luck! =)
You could go that route..and then also branch into different languages besides Japanese.. if you wanted to get also into government work. My niece majored in International Relations..not sure if anything else..and then off to OCS and the Marines.. but doing that and at least one language.. if not more.. would definately set you on a great path. I'd say a Middle Eastern language.. Look at how Dubai is doing.. they are becoming the tourist haven of the world.. Arabic is spoken there? maybe take Arabic also.
