My family is EXTREMELY low income.?

Question:Does that mean it will be harder for me to get into college?
My guidance counselor told me that because we are a white family and not a so called "minority" then it will be harder.

he also said that families with low incomes [extremely low] have it easier because colleges try to fill a certain quota... is this true?i doubt it.

Answers:
It will not be harder for you to get into college than it will be for anyone else. Just get good grades and good SAT scores, and write interesting (and literate) application essays.

Most colleges have "need-blind" admissions. (Check the website of each college to be sure.) "Need-blind" admissions means that colleges do not look at your family's income when making admission decisions.

But there is more. There are many colleges, both public and private, that pride themselves on providing full tuition coverage for low income students. So if you are admitted, many colleges will now go out of their way to help you afford college.

If you live in Ohio, for example, Miami University will cover all of your tuition expenses. If you are extremely smart and get into one of the top universities or liberal arts colleges in the country, most will also cover full tuition for you.

Best of luck to you!
Yes, it's true, especially if you go to a large state school.
Fill out a financial aid application online with FAFSA. It's a federal program and cannot discriminate based on color. You may qualify for a Pell Grant, which you don't have to pay back, or you may just qualify for student loan, which you do pay back, but at a somewhat decent rate, and after you are no longer in school.

As for getting into school, it's mostly going to be about grades. Study and do your best and you should be fine.
You may not have the whole race thing on your side, but because you are from an extremely low income family, you definitely have a shot at getting into a preferred college because they DO try to fill certain quotas. Don't doubt your COLLEGE COUNSELOR!

Before you even apply for college, you might want to read up on HOW colleges select their students. Here in California, there's comprehensive review in which a student is judged as "objectively" as possible based on 14 criteria (location to school, extracurriculars, special talents, school programs, GPA, SATs, etc.). Just search for the factors that make up the college selection process.
Fill out a FAFSA form. As you are from a low income family, you are likely to get more financial aid. Also, apply to need blind schools. They will accept you based on your application, regardless of your financial situation.
Go to freewebs.com, sign up, and apply for scholarships. There are over a million and one is bound to pertain to you.
If all else fails, apply for a loan with the lowest interest rates. If you or the person who cosigns the loan has a low credit score, you will have less options.
Good luck!
First of all...relax guy. If you are extremely low income then you will get financial aid. Let me also ear up the urban legend that "minorities" take funds away from other students. MInority students have certain funding, USUALLY and for the most part from minority organizations, because of the fact that a great percentage of minorities are born into xtreme low income and will unfortunately die in low income. Most do not have the opportunity to even go to college because there is no way they'd be able to pay for it without help.now that I cleared that up... back to your financial aid situation...

File your fafsa as early as possible. the later you wait the less money to go around. look into state grants and such, look into organizations, that youre parents may have been involved in...a lot of them offer assiatance. If your on public assistance a lot of schools will waive your tuition fees for a certain number of classes. Even if you have to go to community college for 2 years its not that bad. If you do go to Community college you have a better chance of getting into the larger named universities w/ full or partial scholorships., but when you recieve fin aid at Community colleges usually your fin aid will cover more than what you tuition books and fees are. Any extra money will be refunded to you in a check. MOst of the students at my school get around $1,000 plus a semester in fin aid refunds. Good luck and relax man, you'll make it. : )
maybe, but i think that if you really want to
go to college you need to be fully committed
and to work relay hard for some time,
probably like every other place there is some
politic involve and that's life for all of us,
work hard and be fully committed and potions,
