I don't know what your record is, so if there is no chance of your getting into Stanford, why waste your time? If you just think that you won't get in because it is competitive, then maybe it would be worthwhile. Other colleges in the area are UC Berkeley (also very competitive), San Francisco State University, San Jose State University, California State University East Bay, Sonoma State, Mills College, University of San Francisco, Santa Clara University, St. Mary's College.
In New York, you have NYU and Columbia as the two very competitive universities. the CUNY universities, including Hunter College and Baruch College, Fordham University, Pace University, New School University, Stony Brook University, St. John's University, Marymount College, Marymount Manhattan College, and Long Island University, among others.
How bout half way---University of Nebraska, Lincoln Nebraska. Or Univ of Nebraska at Omaha Nebraska...
San Jose State University
University of California at Santa Cruz
There are many different universities around San Fransisco but the best is Standford followed by UC Berkeley, I would strongly recommend applying to both of these. Next on the list is University of the Pacific which is in Stockton not to far from SF, than I would consider UC Davis. All these universities are great no matter what major you choose.
-Hope that helps
There is the University of San Fransisco and San Fransisco State University to start off with.
UC Berkeley, USF, San Jose State are ok ones in the SF area. In NYC you have Columbia and NYU that stand out.
Might as well apply to Stanford if you can afford it. Think of it as an expensive lottery ticket. I truly believe their admissions process is just a lottery. Because some people with 4.7+ GPA's (3.9+ unweighted), perfect SAT's/AP's, ec's that fill the sheet, and got into Harvard, etc can't get in but some people with barely a 3.4, 0 ec's, and low SAT's get in.
