Answers:
its the grading of the degree.
a 'first' is the highest you can get (usually 70% +)
a '2:1' is a higher second class (approx 60-70%)
a '2:2' is a lower second class (approx 50-60%)
a 'third' is ok (approx 40-50%)
a 'pass' is still a degree. (approx 40%)
you are an 'undergraduate' until you pass (graduate). If you complete a Masters Degree or anything higher you are then a 'post graduate'
shouldnt worry about it too much. unless you are aiming at a really top career, most employers are happy that you have a degree whatever the grade. It shows that you have stuck at the course, you are committed and you have learnt valuable transferable skills.
Best is a first, then an upper second 2:1, then a lower second (or Desmond) 2:2, after that it gets a bit desperate with a pass or third.
2:2 is the grade
it goes
1st
2:1
2:2
3rd maybe even lower
the best is a 1:1 and so on, 1;2 then 2:2 then 2:3 ,
a 2:2 is average grade equally to a bb
a 1:1 is an AA
and a 2:1 is a Ab
hope that helps
It means they went to class and made some effort
3 means they went to class and considered themeselves to bright to revise and still mananged to pass.
2.1 means they studied but were lacking
1 means they can pass exams better than the rest of the cohort.
I got a 3 some 20years ago and I now earn more than anybody else in my cohort.
1st Class Honours top, then 2nd class higher (2:1) Honours; then 2nd class lower (2:2) Honours then 3rd class Honours
then Pass (no Honours)
Some degrees may only be for a pass (not an Honours degree). Some people will only get Honours if they did a 4th year in Scotland especially.
A second class of any kind can be considered a good degree for many purposes; 2:1s are looked for by most MA courses. generally fewer people get a 1st than a 2:1 or 2:2, except for Oxford and Cambridge (high no. of 1sts).
However the range of scores will vary by college, and obviously people look at different degrees from different Universtities as being on different levels based on their opinon of the Uni. The grades are not standardised, Oxford gives most 1sts by tradition a lot more, but they argue it reflects quality.
1st = 70% - 100%
2.1 (upper 2nd) = 60% - 69%
2.2 (lower 2nd) = 50% - 59%
3rd = 40% - 49%
Fail = 0% - 39%
if you really do not know are you really ready to actually study for a degree
This is a second class degree, at the lower level, a so called lower second. It is still worth something. I studied for a masters degree in archaeology, after getting a 2:2 in history, the only problem was that I had to pay my own fees for postgrad study.
best wishes
Undergraduate means that it is the first degree you have done. After that there is a Masters degree and things like PhD - but you cannot do with without your Undergrad.
The 2:2 has been explained by most previous answers.
First (Best)
2:1
2:2
Third
In my experience, if you want to go on to do further study, or you apply for graduate positions, they want you to have achieved at least a 2:1.
