Many religious or Christian universities have convocations. The freshman convocation is directed at welcoming freshmen and their families to the university community and promotes student success and the attainment of a degree.
It is the official welcoming ceremony of freshmen to the University Community by the President, Provost and faculty and staff. It is designed as an opportunity to convey to students the significance of their educational endeavor and the commitment of the university to support them in the achievement of this goal - within the classroom and without! It is also a celebration of university life and the traditions

we had convocation at my high school, which was affiliated with the episcopal church--i believe we had it every week and i'm pretty sure they used the term loosely, because it was really just a meeting with announcements and stuff. i always thought the word was supposed to have some sort of religious meaning (like invocation) but i guess not. convocations aren't unusual--i think they just go by different names.
