What can you do with a PhD in english literature?

Question:I know you can teach in a college/university with a PhD in english literature, but I have heard that the job market is rather swamped with would-be english professors and that it will be very difficult to secure a position (a full-time one I mean) and gain tenure.

I was wondering if you guys would be able to either dispell these notions, or give me alternative career paths that I might want to consider?

I would also like to ask if anyone knows the average salary of an english professor and how it ranks up with other professors in different subjects?

p.s. bare in mind that I am asking for career paths that I can go down with a PhD in english literature, not for generic careers for someone just interested in the subject of english in general with no specific academic credential in mind.

Answers:
Ever looked at careers in book editing? That would require a thorough command over the English Language, one reason why PhD in English Literature or Linguistics are preferred. You should find the pay scales to be quite competitive and it would keep increasing as you gain more experience on the job.
hello dear,
I know You teaching in college but insteade of Ph.D. you have also an option for the professorship in colleges that you have to qualify NET that is National Eligibility Test for the Felloship this is also known as JRF junior research fellowship.
Then you are able to teach in Degree level colleges.
Now It is also on the State level exam named as SLET that is State level Eligibility Test.
So try for it.
I think its form are published in the month of Dec. It is of Two times in a Year.
so, trying that option is best according to my point of view.
