Online education is expensive to deliver. On top of the costs of infrastructure and teacher fees, the costs of accreditation are very very high.

That said, there is very little out there that is free. Even so, there is some. The FEMA Emergency Management Institute offers a long list of courses in disaster preparedness and emergency response for free to the US public because they'd like you to be prepared for disasters.

Many of these are worth college credit - though getting credit at a college often involves a fee.

Also, many corporate training programs have been evaluated for credit by the ACE. If you are affiliated with one of these companies, you might be able to collect some "free" credit.
