You mean where they are rushing for the red clay soil?
OK, when, where, why?? When they opened up the Indian territory to white settlement there was a huge rush to get the land. Some people went in Sooner than they were supposed to go. Thus the name Oklahoma Sooners. I think it was 1898. Could be wrong on the date.
Oklahoma became a state in 1907 On April 22, 1889, a section of land in Central Oklahoma was opened up for white settlement. At noon on that day a gun was fired and "Boomers" scrambled for their 169 acres. For a small price, these men and women could lay claim to what would later become Oklahoma City, Guthrie, Edmond, Norman, etc. This was one of many land rushes throughout the future state of Oklahoma, all of them from land taken by the government from the Indians.
There were some who snuck in before the land run to steal a parcel of land as their own. These "Sooners" did what they could to act out their rights to the land. Some did succeed but others failed.
