Ask someone who does to your school for some insider tips. I work as an orientation leader on campus and I always try to tell the students helpful tidbits. Here are some that might apply to you/your school:
At my student union, one of the offices offers free scantrons and blue books (which are for essay tests). Try asking if the 'ASB' at your college has it. Usually the ASB fee for students allow the office to do this for the students.
See if your campus bookstore has an online database for what books will be needed and buy them online. I just finished looking up the textbooks I need and bought them online. I bought 3 books that were available online and instead of paying 50 dollars, I paid 20. My first quarter in college as a freshman? I paid 20 dollars for a 70 dollar philosophy book and then sold it to another student for 60 dollars.
If you don't have your own checking and savings yet, do so. Get one! At least open up a checking account, that way you can buy books online if you don't have a credit card.
The campus bookstore offers discounts to their employees. So if you work as a temporary employee during break and finals, you can get a discount if you want to buy your books at school.
Get involved on campus. Especially if you are not dorming, it will make it feel more like home. I don't mean you have to join a sorority or a fraternity, but you can join other things. There are tons of organizations. There are religious, health, political, ones for your major, and so forth.
On the first day of class, do try to grab a seat in the front. As a professor once told me, the first two-three rows are the A students and from there one the grades drop. Not necessarily always true but a lot of times, yes.
Participate in class. ESPECIALLY if you are at a large campus or class. That way the teacher will remember you and when the time comes that you want to ask your professor to change you 89.6 to a 90 so you can get that A-, it will come in handy.
Know where all the computer labs are. There are usually a few that most students don't know about. For my school, it is the computer lab in the E&T building. Most people don't know it exist.
The library study rooms are perfect for when you need a quiet place to study in between finals and midterms. The library also might have a media floor where you can watch movies when you want to kill some time.
Try to get a campus job. A campus job will always be lenient if you need to study for school or have a paper to write and can't go to work. Maybe if you are lucky and if you decide to further your education with a masters, if you have a full-time job. Classes are usually only a few dollars for employees. You'll save a lot more!
I hope that was helpful and good luck! Best wishes!
The first, and most important, question that should be answered is why are you going to college?
If you are attending college to satisfy your desire to learn how to attain knowledge, then that is where you should focus. This will be an excellent time to find yourself, to learn who you are, become acquainted with diversity, and find a new relationship with your parents. The first two years are not as demanding as the next two...or more. Find a few good mentors and learn from them. Never forget that you are your future, and your future can be good or bad.
If college is only an excuse to party, then choose a birth control method that is right for you and stick with it. Also, while you are wasting a good opportunity to better yourself, decide on how important work is to you; If you think you can find a potential husband who will take care of you for the rest of your life, then good luck. Otherwise, plan on even more disappointment.
