Education or Vocational training?

Question:I know its not strictly a matter of one or the other and that we all need some education and we should all be able to earn our living.

Perhaps the difficulty is that the teachers are mostly very badly educated themselves and the curriculum thay are asked to deliver is not relevant to the needs of their pupils, especially unacademic older boys.

Answers:
In the US, the schools are all limited by the No Child Left Behind law, so they can't offer much vocational training, any more (unfortunately!).
go for education tetiary learning at a univerisity to gain knowledge that you can later used to learn new skills! Vocational training merely train you on the skills needed to get jobs at the very moment of time. But, things like skills don't last long, and technology changes so fast that you will later be outdated. So, without beign equiped with the foundations from a higher learning, you will find it difficult to pursue a better career. You rely more on yourself than the teachers when you go for further studies.
The problem is the institutions that impose difficult standards to gain access to higher education.

To a large degree it is still an elitist institution that still places the bar too high and expects everyone to reach it regardless and if you don't fit the bill, you find yourself excluded from uni so that THEY can preserve their reputation.

At the end of the day it is pure snobbery.
I would say it would depend on what person you are. If you like hands on experience and learn by doing things then I recommend Vocational training. If you like to think about things and like the freedom of studying a subject to the depth you like then I recommend further education.
I disagree, with Cheekofitall, the majority of us, when we are at school, have no idea what we want to do at that age. Only now in my mid 30's, do I like being in further and Higher Education as it is a challenge. Better in June when the students pass their courses and come on a Level 3 course the following year. My partner is academic, teaching in secondary school, I hated schools and exams. At 27 i returned to college and passed A levels. Now at 35 I have decided toa degree in Mech Eng. I have the practical abilities in my trade to a job, so I have decided to return to education and better myself. Surely, that is more important...?
maybe if they spent more time in schools and less time on holidays like the 6 weeks then the next generation could thrive better.

personally im all for trying to better myself and children.. but parents should also make a stand for childrens education ..children dont need to learn nowadays they have instruments like the computer and the calculator to think for them. we are breeding a society of illiterate, idol, unrespectful kids... or future in their hands. im worried!!
