I recently came back from a very long cross-country tour of colleges for our older son, who will be graduating high school, next year. We visited a very interesting spectrum of colleges. From Ivy leagues, to small town private school, to very large state colleges, on the East coast, Mid West, West coast and Hawaii. The question of essay kept coming up again and again. The 2 messages about the essay, at each and every college we visited, were simply this:
1. Make your essay the story of your life. In a single page, describe what makes you tick. The lessons you have learned about life and how it has given your direction for the future. This could be your negatives and positives as well.
2. They all want to see how you the college where you are applying to, to change the world. They are more interested in individuals who have the ability to learn, but also have a long term vision about the future of the human race. The best colleges are interested to recruit individuals who will use the "unique" resources of the institution where you are applying to, to make this world a better place. Another word, they want you brag about your unique goals as well as highlight their college as well.
Apparently the above two points in the Essay matter a lot. Even with good GPA and SAT scores, the Essay makes it or breaks it for a lot of applicants.
