There are many different techniques to studying. I am sure you've heard lot's of them... from reading and taking notes to quizzing yourself on the material after a section. You must find the right technique that works for you. I will offer you my technique which has helped me in the past.
I consistently found that reading a chapter through without doing any other work will result in poor test and assignment performances. I realize that when I research and look at other resources after reading I tend to understand the material more. Most of the time, you need to understand the bigger picture or idea that is being presented. Don't get stuck with memorizing details. Work from a higher level approach and then fill in details as you begin to solidify your understanding.
Finally, the most important thing is hard work. It is almost guaranteed that you will get better marks if you spend more time on a subject.
Within 24 hours of taking notes, study them.
