Applying to College, need opinions from people who have been there.?

Question:I'll be starting my senior year in a week or so and unsurprisingly I'm looking to apply to some colleges early. I've got an unusual combination, with a score of 29 on my ACT, but only a 2.9 cumulative GPA, and I'm kinda worried that my lack of effort throughout high school is really going to kick me in the *** when trying to get into college (surprise).

Basically I'm asking for some opinions on whether or not my fairly high ACT score will be enough to make up for my low GPA when applying to college. The only college I'm really considering right now is Michigan State, so please give your opinions knowing that MSU is the caliber school I'm looking to get into.

Much Thanks

Your ACT will help to counteract your GPA. However, don't ever just apply to one college, no matter who you are. Visit some other schools and keep an open mind. I had my heart set on one college but as soon as I visited the one I currently attend, it was the place for me. It wasn't a big college and it's not an Ivy League school, but it has good academic programs and opportunities for so much. I'm glad I didn't just apply to one school. Your GPA will affect whether or not you get into a certain college. There's no way around it. Your ACT does help, but again, look into some other schools. Even if you get into and decide to go to MSU, at least you'll be more sure of your decision after finding out about other schools.
Keep your options open, apply to more than one college. You can start at any college and take the prerequiste courses (they usually transfer...these are classes that you take before you begin your major classes), this is if your GPA is not high enough to get into the college you want, and u can use this time to build up ur GPA while you wait to get accepted into the college you really want to get into (MSU). Good luck. Don't give up! Check with the school on the grades and score you need to be accepted.
I would say don't worry about it. Apply no matter what anyone says, but make sure you apply to other colleges "just in case". I got into the college I wanted to go, even though my SAT, GPA, class I took, and extracurricular activities were not up to the college's standards.
I think you'll get into most schools with no problem. My brother failed out of Purdue and then was accepted to Hawaii, which he failed out of and then was accepted to a UW school. In my opinion, most schools will take anyone who will pay their tuition. Also, I think a higher ACT score is better to have than a high GPA if you can only have one or the other. This shows you know your stuff while a high GPA shows that you can learn well in a box with no windows.
