Contrary to what others say here -- the students are not particularly liberal -- nor are they hippies. Pick one at random, and it is likely to be a Chinese-American male from a middle class family with middle of the road politics who grew up in California.
There are lots of ex-hippies and liberals in the town -- but they are not associated with the school.

Student protests in the 60's , started by the Free Speech Movement led by a guy with the first name of Mario, can't remember his last name...was it Cuzo or something like that? Then there was the school's Chancelor, I think his name began with a B or was it with an H, and he wore that tam o'shanter hat. Later became a US Senator.. Anyway it was one of the early student protests of the 60's, probably only topped off by the Columbia College student protests in New York several years later which was in a similar vein. I don't include Kent State as to me that was altogether different.
