I've been there. It's really hard to get motivated. I almost quit my program twice because I was getting nowhere. I did take a semester off to teach at a small college to get a break and figure out what I wanted to do. I decided to come back and just plow ahead and finally finished.

I admire your motivation. I finished my BS last year and I'm thinking about going for my masters, but I don't think I will go for a PhD.
There is no reason why a person after studying for so long will not get frustrated and demoralized. But i believe one should pep up ones spirit by realizing that it is one of the top degrees for which you are struggling. A few reach up till here. Moreover you have opted for RESEARCH i.e. even if you get something (or nothing)you have to search for it again and again. Try to look for the flaws which may be there in your practical set up...and above all remember that no pains no gains..consider your hypothesis and planning of the experiments once again .but be calm and cool.ALL THE BEST.
