Would you have taken the job? Following dreams vs. being realistic?

Question:I am one semester away from finishing a Bachelor of Social Work degree (just one course and final practicum remain), and will be done at the end of this year. However, my passion in life is animals. Out of curiosity, I applied for a vet assistant position, and was offered the job, which would start at $10/hour. With on-the-job training, I would have been able to care for the animals at the clinic, take samples, work in the lab, give medications, and eventually use diagnostic tests, such as x-rays, as well as help in surgery. After talking with my husband, I turned down the job, mainly because of the low pay, and also because it would delay completion of my BSW degree, which should get me an income between $15 and $20/hour in my geographic area. However, I can't stop thinking of the vet assistant job and the possibilities it could have brought (going to school to be a vet tech, following my passions, etc.). What would you have done in my situation?

Answers:
Finishing your BA is clearly an important step as you've made a substantial financial investment in it of time and money. Now with your BSW you may want to look at getting into Animal Assisted Therapy which would allow you to combine your love of animals and hopefully your desire to work with peple. One of the great things about social work is that it allows for this holistic way of thinking about not only our work but combining our passions. DA
If there was a way to budget it in our family, I would have taken the job. I am in a similar situation. Is there any way that you can do it part time, just to get your foot in the door. It is a difficult decision and if financially it didn't work, it was just not the time. Money is super important to us right now too, we've had to put off a few things too but you're never too old to go back to school.
If I were in that situation I would have taken the job as the Vet Assistant. Granted it would have been less pay in the begining, but I'm sure there would have been possiblities for promotions and raises. In my opinion it's better to be happy at your job then to make more money. My husband just recently took a job cut. He went to a job that cut his pay down by .50 and cut his hours practicully in half. But he's so much happier. He comes home in a good mood, we no longer get in fights. I've never seen him happier. I can see where your husband is coming from wanting the better pay, but he should have seen how happy you would have been. Your happiness should have been top priority.
Finishing your degree is probably the most important factor, so I would have done the same thing you did. You don't have to give up your dream of working with animals, though. Look for shelters in your area that need volunteers, and try to build up experience that way.
your better off taking higher paying job and volunteering at vet or some other animal place if you enjoy animals
