Degree in English or Social Science?

Question:Although I'm not sure yet if I will teach, I would like to have the option down the road, so I'm thinking about one of these two majors.

Do you think there is more of a demand for English teachers or for social science? I'm slightly more interested in social science, but I have a feeling that Englsih would be more in demand.

Also, other than using the degree for teaching, what's your opinion of either one of these degrees?

Answers:
There is constant demand for English teachers, be that at any grade level. General Social Studies also has constant demand, but less than English. Now, if by "social science" you mean something like sociology, anthropology, etc., you're stuck at the college level if you want to directly use your degree. The market is a great deal smaller.

As for other uses of the degree, don't let yourself be fooled. Yes, it is true that there are people with anthropology or literature degrees carving out magnificent careers in the real world. That has nothing to do with their degrees and everything to do with the individual. My ex-wife has an anthropology degree and most of her "career" has been in call centers--customer service. That's all she could find. If you're after money, study something that you can sell yourself on. If you really don't care about never using your degree for your job and not making any real money, go for the social science. It all comes down to what you personally value. Look at it this way: 30 years from now, what would you regret having done or not done? Go with what gives you no regrets.
English definitely. And skills in proper usage of the language gives you other options such as writing for commercial work...

I'm not sure what the demands are for teachers but i do know that you will have more opportunities if you were to have an english degree.
You could go into law.
You could become a teacher.
You could become a editor
You could become a writer

if you go in for social science
You could be a historian
you could work in a museum
you could be a geologist.
I have a bachelors in English with secondary education certification. Now I work in healthcare (go figure). Degree's in English can open lots of doors because people assume you can communicate and write well. I taught for 3 years in a high school and let me tell you that teaching is a ruthless field and other teachers are cruel and back stabbing to their co workers. Teachers are used to having all the control within their classroom and that flows into other areas of their life (professional relationships being one) and they are often not nice people.
If you can try to double major. It will be helpful later on down the road and could possible earn you more money.
