LMU is nice, but it gets bad once you get out of the immediate campus area. Cross that freeway (or even get close to it) and wheww! Plus, I'm sorta concerned that Playa Vista is gonna blow up from methane gas and take out the surrounding area with it.
Which school you should choose really depends on what your priorities are. Do you just want to be a beach bum? Or do you care about academics and getting a job later?
UC Santa Barbara is a nice school on the beach. If you want to get away from home, UC Irvine is near the beach and is quite nice. Same approximate acceptance standards as UCSB.
UC San Diego is quite gorgeous and some dorms are right on the beach. Much harder to get into though.
If you're looking at the LMU level, Pepperdine was mentioned and it'd be a good choice. I think the beach is nicer at Univ of San Diego though. LA County beaches aren't the greatest. Orange County and further south are better. Or, go up to Santa Barbara.
Technically, Berkeley is kinda close to the shore, but it's the East Bay and it's gross, slimy, brown, etc.
Ummmm...I think I'd look at what the colleges offer first. La Jolla is wonderful but very competitive as are most of the colleges. USD is nice too.
UCSB, UCSD, Pepperdine - all very good, all very close to the beach.
If finances are not a problem, LMU is nice, USC is not on the beach, but you should be able to drive it. of course USC is REALLY hard to get into... i don't know what your GPA is and stuff. UC Santa Barbra is a good school, but has a bad party repuation... not the place if you are the studius sort. UC San diego might be another choice.
California Lutheran is an amazing place - GREAT people, under-appreciated quality of academic program, beautiful location. I would at the very least check it out on your college tours.
