Please does anyone know of a super easy to teach and learn Math curriculum to supplement my son's education?

Question:My son is in a Military school. We have no way to find a Math tutor where we are. He really wants to tackle his Math hang-ups this year. He is a straight A student except for Math. He only started struggling as he started public school as oppose to Christian and Homeschool. He usually does well with new concepts, but has a hard time with the way Math is taught in school.

He was ahead of the kids when he joined this school but got bored and frustrated and now is really behind. I want some educational tools or some really good ideas to really help him out. He is 13 going on 14 in the 8th grade. Thanks so much...

Teaching Textbooks

Go to his school and ask for a homecopy of his mathbook. This way you know what he is learning and it has explanations in there too. You can do his math homework together.
The other thing you could do is advertise at the high school for math tutors or even ask his math teacher to point out the smartest kid in math class and approach it about tutoring.
exercisie his mind with math games that make u think, like sudoku, or things like that.
What math program were you using in homeschool or at the Christian school? If it was working for him, try to get your hands on a copy at his level. Saxon is really popular in the Christian schools, as is A Beka (and both are rock solid programs).
It's unclear if you are looking for something for him to do at home during the summer or if you are looking for something for him to do on the side while he's in school. This could make a bit of a difference on what's suitable.

I'm going to take the safest route and assume he's going to have to do this on his own. Saxon explains everything. There's even a placement test available online http://saxonpublishers.harcourtachieve.c... so you can figure out which level to start him at. If you look clearly at his results and where he's goofed up, it'll also tell you specifically which areas are difficult for him.

Teaching Textbooks and Chalkdust both have video components to the lessons for demonstration purposes. This can be very useful if you have a child who does better with a bit of auditory input or visual demonstrations, or both.

Have a look at the information available online, samples available online, have your son look at them and decide which you think would work best.
We LOVE LOVE LOVE Math U See. They also have a placement test to see where your child should start. There's a dvd of a math teacher, so if you're not sure how to teach a concept, that dvd is a great resource.
Math U See is fantastic.

Check out Life of Fred books - they are great for self-teaching, fun, and thorough. The first two cover all the pre-algebra you could need, then they have books for Algebra, Advanced Algebra, Geometry, Trigonmetry, and Calculus.
Two that are used in the Christian school system allot and are very good is the Saxon math and the A Beka curriculum. I grew up using Saxon math in my Christian school, and I use the A Beka curriculum for my kids. It is easy step by step explaining everything in the students book as you go, but also if you get the teachers addition with it, it will walk you through step by step also so that you can help your son as he goes.
The math that is generally taught in the public school is not as well explained by either the teacher or the book.
Their is A Beka math curriculum for both student and teacher available for cheaper on e-bay, but before you price there, do go to www.abeka.com and get their prices so that you know what not to pay for a used book. Used meaning most will not write in the book but on a separate piece of paper. Hope this helps. Good luck and God bless.
Math-U-See!
