Where to get used Core Knowledge material? What they sell on www.coreknowledge.org looks expensive.?

Question: You can try the used books on Amazon, just type in the title you want and then choose the "buy used" button to browse the different options.

Incidentally, I have several of these books on my shelves that I never use, I didn't really think they were worth the money, and it seems to me there are better sources of curriculum overviews out there. Have you actually looked through one to be sure it is what you want? You could check them out at your library first to be sure. I was dissapointed in mine. The only one I like (and intend to keep) is the first dictionary of cultural literacy. The others I found to be just as incomprehensibly and boringly mish-mashed as the chaotic public school curriculums are.

If you are seriously interested in buying them, I have three of the "What your __ grader needs to know" series gathering dust on my shelves that I would be willing to get rid of... 4th, 5th, and 6th grades, all three for $20 ship included.

I know it's scary to buy of the net like this, since you don't know me and I don't have a paypal account or anything fancy so you might want to try your local goodwill instead or if your library runs a used bookstore. These pop up quite freqently at used bookstores around here, probably because they are not all that great, and people buy them expecting more and then get rid of them.

One free source of the same sort of information is your local state's department of education. Here in Texas if you search out TEKS, you can view the entire sweep of texas goals and objectives for K-12, of different levels of detail, as well as print old copies of the standardized tests by grade level. Most homeschoolers see this sort of curriculum as they "bare minimum", there is much, much more you can accomplish in a one-on-one environment, and the state goals tend to be very vague...things like "will read a variety of materials for a variety of purposes", notice it doesn't say they will actually learn anything, or increase any skill. That's OBE for you.

If you did want to buy mine or ask me any other questions (I am a homeschooling mother of 3) you can write to me at santaellam AT sbcglobal DOT net

I don't like 1st Dictionary. Go for What your -Grader Needs to Know 'Read these to your child and use them as a guide for what materials to cover . Also Books to Build On . Get books listed there for your child at the library used book store or eBay or suggest books for relatives to give as gifts No need to spend a lot of money .Also Dover Publications has many of the same titles for less $$$ Check your local library for the "What your ______ Grader Needs to Know." Your library will probably have them, you can look at them there and then renew them which should give you a lot of time to see if you like them. If you do like them, you can sometimes get them on ebay...especially with summer coming up, a lot of people will have used school stuff for a year and be ready to get rid of it now.
