You may want to go to the local thrift store for clothes. Since kids grow out of clothes so quickly, you'll be able to find gently worn items. As for school supplies and backpacks, sign up for freecycle or cheapcycle in the yahoo groups. You'll find a lot people getting rid of children's things for free or very inexpensively. Dollar stores are great for pencils, pens and paper. You may be even be able to find them backpacks there.

yes, churches are good. we have a couple in our town that have school supply give aways this time of year and a couple of times a year they will have "free" garage sales, where they give clothes away, too.
Also, check with the school. Sometimes they have school supplies for families in need, plus they should have tons of information about assistance for low income households.

Wal Mart, at about half the price of other stores. They have lots of 10 cent and 50 cent items.
