Teaching time to a 6yr old.?

Question:During the day I take care of my 6yr old step-daughter while mom works. The father, on his days, pawns the kid off on to others while he has to "work". My step-daughter was accepted into a gifted school program, but doesn't know basics; ie: street smarts such as telling basic time like 5 oclock 6, 7 and so on. I knownot to confuse her with 5:55 or 12:30. Is it normal for a 6yr old to not know the basics? I've tried a clock so she can move the hands around. When I ask her to tell me the time on the clock she gets it right, but when you tell her to move the hands to 5 o clock and so on she says it's 100 oclock. She knows her #'s and writes them proficiently. I'm just tired of her getting in trouble over what I consider basic knowledge. What do I do so mom is in a better mood when she gets home? My six year old (as of last Friday) still has difficulty with the half hours, but he's got the hours down. Of course, we do a little practice everyday (I set the clock and he tells me the time, he sets the clock and I tell him - sometimes I tell him the wrong time to see if he catches it). Six is really on the edge of learning 'time'. If she can read the time to the hour, just relax. She may be doing it because she's tired of you worrying about her. Soon enough, she'll be able to set the clock to the time you tell her. Try working on something else for a while, then come back to it in a month or so. lighten up it will come Yes it is normal. You shouldn't get mad at her for not knowing stuff she is a little girl. 6 years old is kindergarten age she isn't supposed know how to tell time yet.

If she is kindergarden age, she will learn time to the hour. It is basic to us, but actually it is a very abstract concept. Especially to a 6 year old, what does time look like? In school, we don't introduce time to the exact minute until 2nd or 3 rd grade. By then, the kids have a better sense of what time is. Time is a difficult concept. You are right to only do o'clock. I would do it practically so point out when it is 5 o'clock or 6 o'clock or say "Tell me when it is 5o'clock."
