It's usually called home-study or independent study, from what I understand. This is only available in certain places, though, and the students do tend to refer to it as homeschooling but it doesn't actually fall under their state homeschooling laws. The students are registered as students at the high school.
This is different from correspondence in which you would send the material away to someone to be marked.
