neopets.com is a fun FREE virtual pet game site for kids and they can message each other and trade game items (not real items), but I don't think he'd be able to email YOU from there, unless you were on neopets too. Pogo.gom is a fun game site for kids ages 5-95, if you know what I mean. My mom, aunts, uncles, grandmothers, cousins, friends, everyone is on Pogo and we can play games against each other and compete for badges, and it's not a gambling site. You play for tokens that you can trade in for drawings, more badge challenges, or stuff for your Pogo Mini (a little character you can customize and add captions too). It's totally addicting, we have paid subscriptions so we can get badges and messages and guest passes and stuff, but you can do a free membership if you want, you just don't get as many cool features and the cooler games aren't available unless you have the paid subscription. All the best internet games are on Pogo.com. There are all ages on Pogo, but it's mostly adults. The games look cartoony and they are kid safe, there's nothing dirty or offensive in those games. The chatrooms on the other hand, are usually fairly clean, but not always, and there is a chat filter you can turn on so cuss words look like @*&$^ instead of real letters. If your kid is smart he'd get a kick out of beating adults at checkers and scrabble.
Check major kid brand sites like Nickelodeon, Crayola, Disney, Cartoon Network, NickJr.com, etc and see if they offer anything like that. But like I said, you'll have to see whether or not they are able to email to someone like you or grandma from there if that's what you need. Otherwise I'd say yahoo if you need him to be able to email anyone like you or Grandma.
And teach your child the values of internet safety because otherwise he's going to be vulnerable to internet predators no matter what email or website he uses.
