im not a parent, im in middle school, but i think its a bad idea bcuz when u do that, the kids dont have a chance to make friends!
No you should put him in a real school so he can socialize
no no no, he need s to go to a "regular" school.
i would have hated to not go to a real school, even though i had to go to 5 diff schools.
sure it would be safer to do that, but come on, which would have u prefered when u were his age?
THEY ARE THE BEST! DO IT! SCREW HIS LIFE UP FOR GOOD! ITS THE RIGHT CHOICE, TRUST ME!
no
Ignore the stupid public school advertisers above me.
I was in a virtual school for a year, and I didn't like it at all, mainly because the teachers never helped me once in the entire year, no matter how many times I asked.
I wouldn't recommend it.. But some virtual schools might be fairly good, I have heard great things about K12.com.
Now, I have a very strong preference for independent homeschooling over virtual school... but since you are getting the same "socialization" responses all homeschoolers get, I thought I'd answer and tell you not to worry about the social aspects. The people who think that kids studying at home don't have friends and spend all their time sheltered from the world don't have a clue what they are talking about.
As virtual schools go, I have heard that Connections Academy is a good one. Like I said, I prefer homeschooling independently, but if used correctly virtual school can give your child a very solid education.
My mother is thinking of signing me up for one. Yes, it's true he won't get enough socialization time, but sign him up for some county sports or clubs or county parties to make friends! The possibilities are endless! My answer is OFCOURSE!
Here's what I posted on another question that was nearly identical:
It can be good or bad, depending on the academy as well as on how you learn.
Obviously, you want to take a good look at the academy and make sure they have what you're looking for - a good range of classes, teachers that are on call to help you when you need it, and whatever accreditation you might need. If they don't, it's probably not worth the money; there are curricula (A Beka, BJU, for example) that will either teach you by DVD or even send you a hard drive with your year's curriculum already on it.
Also, you need to make sure that your learning style corresponds with online learning. If you like being on the computer, and things make sense to you on the screen, then it may be a good choice. However, if you're more comfortable working with textbooks and workbooks, or you need hands-on type things, it might not be the best bet.
Looking through the website, it looks really good - honestly, it looks like one of the best I've seen. If it's conducive with how your son learns, I'd say go for it!
Virtual schools are good if you want to have the curriculum and marking done for you, if you feel the need for something 'accredited' (after all, there's still the stigma against just basic homeschooling) and if it fits with your child well.
I know some kids who did virtual schooling here and it was great for them. I know other kids for whom virtual schooling would be a flop. To do or not to do depends on your personal situation.
Btw, I've heard good things about Connections Academy. :)
ADDED: A "haha" to the remark about "What would you have preferred at his age?" made by one of the respondents: I would have probably preferred a virtual academy!!
I am only 13... but to me it depends on how old he is. If he Around my age let him decide on what he would rather do but if he is young like 6, or 7 put him in a regular school. To me when you are young you need to socialize. When I get older more towards College I might have classes threw computer. Let him decide if he is old enough.
My boys are doing a K12 virtual academy and we're very excited! They will only spend about 20% of their time online, which I think is great. The older they get, the more time they would spend online.particularly in high school. Check out k12. com and see if they offer a virtual academy in your state. There is no charge and the teachers and other parents are very supportive. They also have a very solid academic program. I don't know much about Connections Academy, other than reading about a few parents that left because they were unhappy, so I can't give a fair opinion there. I think virtual schools in themselves can be a great option for someone that would like their children at home, but does not want to worry about planning the lessons themselves. My biggest concern was that they would spend too much time on the computer, which is again why I chose k12 over some of the other virtual academies available to me.
No. I did Ecot for a year and a half and I hated it. It was irratating because, with E-Schooling, they have a lot of maintenence and down time. The teachers aren't very helpful and sometimes the lessons aren't posted until right before they are due. Over all it's extremely aggravating.
