(4x + 5)2
(x - 10)(x + 10)
(5 - 8y)2
(3x + 4)(2x + 3)
(x + 5y)3
Can you pick ONE and explain how im supposed to do them?
Answers:
I picked the first problem (x-5)(x+10). I'm using a method called FOIL that stands for First Outside Inside Last. The First stands for the first terms in each parentheses so x and x. The Outside stands for the first term in the first parentheses times the last term in the 2nd parentheses, so x and 10. The Inside stands for the terms in the parentheses closest to each other, like -5 and x, and Last stands for the last term in each parentheses, so -5 and 10. Now all you do is you follow the FOIL rule.
First: (x times x) makes x^2
Outside: (x times 10) makes 10x
Inside: (-5 times x) makes -5x
Last: (-5 times 10) makes -50
Now add the answers together: (x^2)+(10x)+(-5x)+(-50)
Now rewrite it to make it easier: x^2+10x-5x-50
Simplify as much as you can (10x-5x=5x) so you now have x^2+5x-50. That's your answer.
(x-5)(x+10)=?
Follow the FOIL method (First, Outer, Inner, Last) to multiply through. Be careful with the signs.
x*x+x*10-5*x+5*10=
x^2+10x-5x+50=
x^2+5x+50
For one like the second one (4x+5)2 you multiply the values inside the parentheses by 2.
Hope that helps.
FOIL
First, outside, inside, last.
Start with the first term in each expression
(x - 5) (x + 10), so (x)(x)
Then the outside terms, so (x)(10)
Then the inside terms, so (x)(-5)
Then the last terms, so (-5)(10)
Combine the answers to get a final answer of x^2+5x-50
(4x + 5)2 -Mulitply 2 by both 4 and 5
8x+ 20
(3x + 4)(2x + 3)
6x^2+ 9x+ 8x+ 12
6x^2+17x +12
The FOIL method (First, Outer, Inner, Last) is very useful to know.
(3x + 4)(2x + 3)
If you multiply... using the FOIL method... the...
first terms... you get (3x)(2x) = 6x^2
outer terms... you get (3x)(+3) = +9x
inner terms... you get (+4)(2x) = +8x
last terms. you get (+4)(+3) = +12
.then when you add all those products up... you get...
6x^2 + 9x +8x +12
which equals...
6x^2 + 17x + 12. which is your answer to this problem.
Hope this helps!
(x - 5)(x + 10)
x times x is x square, x times 10 is 10x, -5 times x is -5x, and -5 times 10 is -50
=x(squared)+10x-5x-50
=x(squared)+5x-50
you multiply the first number in the first bracket by both numbers in the second.. and multiply the second number in the first bracket by both numbers in the second bracket.
if you don't understand tell me =)
I can tell you how to solve all of them if I wanted to,but I'll choose (x+5y)3.All you have to do is multiply 3*x then 3*5y.It should look like this: (3*x+3*5y) or ( (3)x+(3)5y).Multiplying 3*x is just like multiplying 3*1x.Anyway your answer should look like this:3x+15y.
(3x + 4)(2x + 3)
for those kind you have to take the 3x in the first parenthesis and multiply it by everything in the second parenthesis and so then you would get 6xsquared + 9x. then you take the 4 in the first parenthesis and multiply it by the everything in the second parenthesis so you get 8x + 12. then you have to add it all together.. ( for 6xsquared right a small 2 to the right of the x not the word squared ) 6xsquared + 17x + 12
its all a matter of distributing
(x + 5y)3
for this just distribute the 3 to everything in the parenthesis
3x + 15y

Ok I choose (x-5)(x+10)
Use the foil method
FOIL= First-Outter-Inner-Last
Take the first numbers x and x and multiply them=x^2
Multiplt outter numbers x and ten and get 10 x
Multiply inner numbers -5 and x and you get -5 x
Multiply last numbers -5 and 10 and get -50
Then put the answers into a problem then solve
x^2+10x-5x-50=x^2+5x-50.
Now if you have to simplify the answer x^2+5x-50 since you have both plus and minus signs your answer will have a plus and a minus. If it was two pluses youd have 2 pluses in your answer minus 2 minus signs.
Then you you have to find two factors of -50 that when subtracted equal 5 which is 10 and -5
(x+10) (x-5)
Your answer would then be x=-10 x=5
I hope thats understandable
What you need is the Distributive Property! (The FOIL method is a trick that some people use for these problems, but it is really the distributive property in disguise anyways.)
Notice that all of your examples involve multiplying one expression by another.
Example 1: (4x+5)2
It may be easier to rewrite it like this: 2(4x+5)
This means that we have to multiply everything in the parentheses by 2. So...
2(4x+5) = 2*4x + 2*5
= 8x + 10
Example 2: (x-5)(x+10)
This one is trickier because there are two terms in each expression. However, the same idea applies: we will multiply each term in the first expression by each term in the second expression.
(x-5)(x+10) = x*x + x*10 - 5*x - 5*10
= x^2 + 10x - 5x - 50
= x^2 + 5x - 50
