It takes 10 identical pieces to form a circular track for a pair of toy racing cars. If the inside arc of each piece is 3.4 in. shorter than the outside arc, what is the width of the track?
Thanks again!
Answers:
this has nothing to do with concentric circles...
10 identical pieces
10 arcs to form inner circle
10 arcs to form outer circle
..
this problem maybe be missing something..
...so I used x to represent to length of one of the outer arcs
so then the length of one inner arc would be x - 3.4
there are 10 of each so 10 of x = 10x would be the circumference of the outer circle
10(x - 3.4) = 10x - 34 would be the circumference of inner circle
formula for circumference is pi*d (d is diameter of circle)
the question asks for the width of track, which is basically the difference bewteen the two circles' radii
radius of outer circle is 5x/pi
radius of inner circle is (5x - 17)/pi
subtract the two fractions and you get -17/pi and that is the width.. although I'm not sure how a measurement can be negative..
I think you can do something to the variable so that x represents the inner arc and x + 3.4 represents the outer arc
so the answer would come out to be 17/π
I think 17/π is the answer
(π is pi)
