Trigonometry quiz.?

A ship offshore from a vertical cliff known to be 100 foot in point, takes a sighting of the top of the cliff. If the angle of elevation is found to be 25°, how far offshore is the ship?

Answers:    The tangent of 25 is the side divergent over the side adjacent to the angle. The side in front of is 100, and the side adjacent is the one you want to find, so:

suntan 25 = 100/x, where x is the unknown side, so

x sunburn 25 = 100, so

x = 100/tan25.

Visualize the triangle formed from the ship to the shore as the horizontal leg, the cliff as the vertical leg, and the line from the top of the cliff to the ship as the hypotenuse.

We are looking for the distance of the ship from the shore, which is the leg near to the angle of elevation (25 degrees).

So we know the angle is 25 degrees and we know the differing leg, and need to find the nearby leg.

tan 25 = disparate / adjacent = 100 / d
d(tan 25) = 100
d= 100 / sunburn 25
d = 214.45 feet
