The war began on Feb. 8, 1904, when the main Japanese fleet launched a surprise attack and siege on the Russian naval squadron at Port Arthur.

Treaty of Portsmouth, (Sept. 5 [Aug. 23, Old Style], 1905), peace settlement signed at Kittery, Maine, U.S., ending the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05. According to the terms of the treaty, which was mediated by U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, the defeated Russians recognized Japan as the dominant power in Korea and turned over their leases of Port Arthur and the Liaotung Peninsula, as well as the southern half of Sakhalin Island, to Japan. Both powers agreed to restore Manchuria to China.
Years ago, various nations were expanding into territories that other nations were trying to expand into, which led to some conflicts & this one has what might be considered to be one of the biggest blunders in history.

The Russians were hurt by geography and poor leadership.

Although Russia had completed the Trans-Siberian Railroad, they were not able to exert a lot of power in their East.

Russia had only two sea ports, so they had to circumnavigate the world to get one fleet from the Baltic to the vicinity of Japan. They were very ignorant of other shipping at sea. The Russian fleet saw some innocent British ships, and shot at them, thinking they were Japanese. This was in the North Sea, where most of the ships logically would be from Europe. The result of this was denial of access to refueling ports for most of the journey. I suppose saying "I'm sorry, and will pay reparations" was not in the Czar's vocabulary.

This war was the first time an Asian power defeated a European power.
