The side that says inches usually goes 1 to 12. The marks in the middle between 2 numbers (2 and 3, say) are halves, and between the halves and inch marks, are the quarters. Then the eigthes, then the sixteenths.
The centimeters are marked the same way, except between the centimeter markings are millimeters. Ten millimeters in a centimeter.
