What could I use as a hook for my speech?

Question:My English teacher is having us give a speech which is supposed to be a "glorified show-and-tell". Meaning we bring in items that represent something interesting about us, and present them.

But, I don't know what to use as a hook. He said something like a girl who could speak Korean did so to catch their attention, but I can't do anything like that. My only real talent/thingy is my knowledge of the Simpsons. What should I do to get their interest?

Answers:
If you are presenting about your love of the Simpsons, try starting with a bunch of quotes of the trademark lines from the show like:

"Doh"
"Don't have a cow, man"
"HA HA"
"Thank you, come again"
"Diddily"

Good luck with your speech.
Start by listing some interesting factoids that are relevant to your classmates. If you ask them in question format, you can lead your speech to the Simpsons with most people not catching on until they get there.

For example:
- Ask people what the longest running television show in the history of TV is
- Come up with a list of a wide variety of guest stars, and ask what they all have in common
- Come up with a little known catch phrases that came from the show that are now a part of your daily lexicon (I would stay away from the "well-known" ones like "D'oh", "Aye, caramba!", and "Don't have a cow man!" in favor of more subtle lines)

Don't answer the questions individually, but instead answer them all at once after you've given people a second or two to think about it.

That is the hook - getting people to think about what you are saying as you are saying it.
