Should the US have gotten involved in the Rwandan genocide?

Question:I was assigned an essay for my 10th grade Pre-IB Civics course and was asked to argue this question: "Should the US have gotten involved in Rwanda and should it get involved in future conflicts such as this?" I have formed my own opinion of this question, and have seen the movie Hotel Rwanda (I am watching it again with the class as well). However, I would like the opinions of as many Americans, Europeans (preferably from those countries which were slightly involved in the conflict, i.e. Belgium, Italy, etc.) and Rwandans as possible.
Thanks! =D

The involvement ot the US could have made a difference but was not necessary if another power had brought in airsupport and re-inforcements. France could have made also a difference since they had air force units and the French Legion nearby.
Where the US could have made a big difference was when the UN mandate should have been changed in the UN council they did not enough as if they didn't believe what was happening. As a permanent member they could have made here a big difference.

As a Belgian I have followed the Rwanda genocide and maybe the biggest problem was the UN attitude which limited very the weapons that the UN forces had at their disposal (only light weapons) and the limits on the actions that were allowed.
The Belgian Paratroopers had a reputation in Africa and could have made a difference (they were considered as the best UN troops in Rwanda) but they (and all Belgians) lost confidence in the commanding officer Dallaire when he did nothing to save the live of 10 paracommandos who where brutally massacred (after they had received the orders to hand over their weapons). After this killing the UN mandate was not even changed.
After all this the Belgian gouvernment gave orders to evacuate the europeans and to retreat. There is meanwhile a lot of proof that this was a complot made by the Hutu to get rid of the Belgians (since they knew best the local situation).
Most of the Belgians have never forgiven Dallaire for his cowardice when he let down his men and that when there trials in Belgium about Rwanda he did not even bother to testify.
Its a very complex matter to explain all this here, so for more specific questions, feel free to email.
