Could you please give some pointers on writing a critical essay?

Question:My thirteen year old has to write a critical essay on a book she has been reading could anyone explain the steps please

Answers:
Okay - get hold a copy of any quality UK newspaper, Times, Guardian, Telegraph, Independant etc and have a read of the book critics section. This should give you some really good pointers. Don't on any account copy them word for word, but try to remember the sort of language the critics use in describing a book which they have read.

Jot down first thoughts. Look and see if those thoughts make sense. Disect the words, so that they come into short sharp sentances. Build on that
Plan what you want to write first. Dissect your essay into chunks and order them logically so the essay flows. You then should write a draft copy and just get all of your ideas down in a rough format of what you want. Read through what you have and edit it until it makes sense and flows well. If there is an interesting point, elaborate on it. Make sure to use the PEE rule. (Point, Evidence, Explanation) when using quotes as these are a very important part. Once you have a structured essay that you are fairly happy with, use a thesaurus and go through it once more to make sure you have used the best words for the purpose and that you haven't written a whole sentence when 2 words would suffice.

Good luck with your essay writing, hope it goes well.
