First we want all the x's on one side and constants on the other. In Algebra you can do anything in an equation as long as you do the same to both sides. Think of a balanced scale... if you had the same weight to both sides, it will stay balanced.
So we have 5x + 19 = 6x + 12...
Let's subtract 6x from both sides:
5x - 6x + 19 = 6x - 6x + 12
-1x + 19 = 12
Now let's subtract 19 from both sides:
-1x + 19 - 19 = 12 - 19
-1x = -7
Now we can divide each side by -1 (dividing or multiplying by -1 just changes the sign, so...)
x = 7
