It's a bit strange if I may say so

We still fly the Union Jack but we have our own identity with the Maple Leaf!! We don't need to add to it because we know our ties are strong and the Queen is on our money and in all government buildings!! We will always be connected by history!!
it would clash with the maple leaf.
As an american it would go against the style of the flag.
Actually, the Canadian flag used to have a Union Jack on it. The Canadian "Red Ensign" flag was used until 1965 (not the first, of course), when it was replace by the current maple leaf.
And just for all you folks who think those of us in the U.S. don't know much - I was born and raised in Texas ;-)
Canada doesn't have as many ties to GB as you might think. Yes they are still part of the commonwealth but today is different that it was x amount of years ago. Most places have some degree of indenpendance.
Also the canadian flag is a reflection of the country as are all national flags. The maple leaf makes you think about maple trees that it comes from and in turn eventually maple syrup which is one of the many things associated with the country.
The Union Jack for example is an almalgamation of all the flags of the UK. Hence the term "Union Jack"
Canada is an independent Country and has been for many years so why therefore should they have the Union Jack on their flag ! The same with the other countries including USA which for years was ruled by Brits - look into your history books
thomas s,for your information the Union Jack does contain red white and blue.
In reference to the original question, I believe that as Canada is also a French speaking country, the union jack would be inappropriate as there are some regions is Canada that speak French.
Perhaps the Canadians have a bit more imagination than our Antipodean cousins?
Plus they do have a lot of Maple Trees.

The Canadian flag used to have the Union Jack in one corner at the masthead. Not sure what else was on it, crossed tomahawks possibly.
Canada wanted to express itself as a new and free nation and went for the Red Maple Leaf flag we see today.
Think the flag change happened back in the 1960s.
Edit: Thomas S above is ignornant of the history of his own national flag, ye old Stars and Stripes. The original flag of the American Colonies had the British Union Flag in the masthead corner and thirteen red and white stripes. All that happened at Revolution was the Union Flag got ripped out and was replaced by a circle of 13 white stars. There is one state in the Union, Hawaii, which still bears the Union Flag.

I expect the King of Hawaii could not bear to live in a republic.
Edit: clarica 001 above is quite wrong in suggesting there are few ties between UK and Canada. The ties are very strong. Canada has a House of Commons and not a Senate. Canada has HM Queen as head of state. Canada has the Cunard Shipping Line who's HQ is here in London right in Canada House on Trafalgar Square - possibly after Buckingham Palace the most famous and important address in all London. Historically there's the Hudson's Bay Company - how British is that?
