It is a studied effort , and a person is never to old to learn new things, I think what you want to do is not used the slang words. The choice is up to you, and may come in handy when dealing with people in business, or those on the Internet, I have a kind of rule of thumb, I write as I speak, it is who I am, and if the slang you use is not racist or out right vulgar, then I think that you should be true to yourself.
I feel ya on this one. I'm also from the south and speak a lot of slang. I think you know how to use correct english, it's moreso a matter of taking the time to think about what you're going to say before you say it. I find myself in the same dillemna especially being a teacher and having 20 to 30 young adults waiting to criticize me.
Read lost of books.
Obtain books from the library,not just one but many, and read them every possible moment. You should also watch documentaries and other similar programs on B.B.C.
Try and (mentally ) correct the grammar of others.- I do because I( am English ) wnet to an expensive boarding school.
I've learned that you can learn anything if you listen to it often enough. Works.
Are there any city or community colleges near you? Sign up for a course in English grammar. They may even offer them at night or on the weekends. Sometimes High Schools offer adult education classes, too. You might check there as well. Good luck!
Take my English classes. It is possible. In fact, grammar makes more sense when you are older.
