Citations in college papers?

That depends on the subject for which you're writing your paper. English uses MLA (no footnotes), while the sciences and the business community use APA (both).
Use footnotes. Intext citations can look really messy if the titles of the journals and articles are really long.

XXO is correct though. You should use the writing style specified by the instructor.
