The Chrysalids by John Wyndham
Witch World by Andre Norton (any from the series is good)
Although I wouldn't normally suggest anything by Stephen King his book "the Long Walk" is good. Just avoid all his other stuff for now!
'Eragon' by Christopher Paolini. )It is way better then the movie was! ) The follow-up book 'Eldest', is awesome too.
Mostly tho, what you read is going to be defined on what interests you. Romance, Sci-Fi, Sci-Fantasy, Mystery, True-Crime, Futuristic, or even non-fiction.

In my opinion, Jane Austen was the world's greatest female novelist and "Pride and Prejudice" her greatest novel. "Emma" and "Persuasion" are also wonderful.
Charles Dickens, "A Christmas Carol" and "Oliver Twist".
George Eliot, "Silas Marner"
Americans:
Stephen Crane, "The Red Badge of Courage"
Willa Cather, "My Antonia"
Mark Twain, "Huckleberry Finn" and "Tom Sawyer"
Any of these novels can be bought for less than $8.00 at a bookstore that stocks literary titles. Penguin Books always has excellent forewords included to help you understand the novel.
