i played in hs marching band and also college marching band..What worked for me..is to figure out the tune and how its supposed to sound..and then take it 4 bars at a time...Play the first 4 bars over and over again..until you have them down and then move on to the next 4 and then put those two together and so on and and so on until you can play the whole song by memory..Its hard i know...In college we had to memorize 4 tunes in a week and different tunes each week through the season..not to mention the 8 other general stand tunes we played in the stands..Good Luck you can do it..
Well, I play piano and I think it's kind of the same.
It works for me when I look for patterns in the music.
Then you go from there.
You pretty much just have to keep practicing and practicing!
Good Luck!
band music is very repetitive...that will help. start by learning just 4 measures...repeat it over and over until you know you've got it. learn 4 more same way, then add it to what you know. continue on and on. try to imagine other parts especially percussion as you go. it will be easier to join in if the other parts don't throw you off.
good luck and have fun with it!
