Practice, practice, practice. Any writing will help you increase your facility at writing. Check the link, and add Miss Sunshine to your contacts. She asks one or two "write a story using these phrases" questions every day. These are excellent writing exercises!
Just spend 5 minutes oultining what you're going to say before you start writing. This will save you a lot of time. You could also write your introduction last, because it's often the hardest part to write.
5 paragraphs - use your 5 five fingers to remind yourself:
1. intro (main idea)
2. detail and support
3. detail and support
4. detail & support
5. conclusion (restate main idea)
1) Clear your mind of anything you might have brought into class from the outside world. Worries about money, significant others, and other classes need to go away before you can get creative.
2) Read. I use this one quite often - Sometimes you'll see a passage in a book that could have been written better, or that could have used more detail. Grab onto that! re-write it the way you would like it. (Just don't let it go outside your house...) Also, pay attention to the way authors describe things. The key is to create a picture using only words... as soon as you can do that to a reader, they're going to be hooked.
3) Know the criteria inside and out. If you see any loopholes, exploit them, but be COMPLETELY sure you can defend your answer when the teacher asks you about it. Also, keep in mind that your teacher is your audience. You are trying to capture his or her attention and keep them interested - if you can do that while meeting the criteria, you are a genius.
4) throw your personal experiances into the ring! Personal experiances are awesome to write about. re-live the moment for a few minutes, and then write down all the details you see, as well as the overall picture. You've got your story right there! organize it and put it in the correct format, and there ya go.
5) be oppinionated. Unless this essay is supposed to be an informatory essay, your oppinions are always welcome. However, don't use words like "I" "Me" "My" etc. Keep in mind that this is formal writing.
I used these throughout my highschool years and I aced about 75-80% of all my essays and timed writings... the ones I didn't pass were the ones where they said "This is your topic, these are the details, keep me interested." Those are the essays of mine that were extremely dry and boring.
