What is the proper punctuation for thoughts of a character?

Question:Im writing a paper for school and I am not sure whether to show characters thoughts as dialouge or regular sentences. Also could someone provide an example, orginal or not it doesn't matter.

You should show a character's direct thoughts in italics, without quotation marks.
