What is the historical background or rationale behind summer vacations in schools?

Question:I would be thankful if somebody shares "Summer vacations' history, purpose, uses for students, parents and teachers.." with concrete reference please. Thanx

Answers:
Helping with the farming..
summers off comes from when places were mostly farms and the kids got off school to help on the farm, plant harvest for fall. and to compete in fairs.
In most parts of the country, children were expected to help their family in the fields at that time of the year.school funding has always been an issue as well. As far as necessity goes, I think kids should definitely have a big break!

I just read this a few minutes ago. It's very informative.
Summer "vacation" was when farming families would begin their harvest. Children were given the break from school to go home and work on the farm. We're not much of an agrarian society anymore, but I'm glad we still have summer vacations.
Funny that I should come across this question as this was something just asked in the office. But the rationale behind summer vacations for schools are that during the summer months many of the school's buildings were not adequately equipped with the ventilation that it required to have anyone within it's compound during those months. Again too there were students that hardly came to school on a regular basis, because back then education was not mandatory and as the summer got hotter, fewer and fewer students attended, thus leading to teachers and principals taking the summer months off as their vacation time. I don't know if this helps you, but you can check today's edition of msn.com to back up this posting. Happy Research.
The US being based on an agricultural calendar. The invention of the automobile (slow as they were) would allow the family to travel to new "faraway" places. Now it is based purely on tradition or apathy...depending on your point of view.
