i believe both have its pros and cons, if you tour with parents you can check more in to detail but itas most likely going to cost you more considering there are two extra tickets and extra rooming while you wont get the advangtage of wondering off into your own schedule with the tour but you will get to knwo the main information you need i would go with the tour it will likely be cheaper
Harvard and Tufts are right next to each other. That trip won't cost you anything. Travelling by yourself through this whole area though may not be the safest idea. UMaryland in College Park can be dangerous at times and it's recommended that you have someone with you. I've been approached by several homeless guys in College Park when I worked there. The DC metro area is a little scary. The Boston schools I never had that problem with when I visited; those were always safe. Never been to Penn though. I'd say Boston you'd be all right by yourself, but take someone with you to NY and DC. There is reliable metro that connects all of them, though, and that may be less expensive. I can't see the whole trip costing 2 grand.
When you're in College Park, eat at Plato's Diner. They have the most incredible breakfast plate, The Terp. Best breakfast you can get for 9 bucks. ;)
