Here's a site (1st few links) that tracks the most popular items. On the first link, you can pull down a specific category that you want to check (like books---which would give you the latest copies of Harry Potter or the South Beach Diet book.)
But lately, the most popular selling items are CARS... in fact, eBay has shifted ads to promoting their car sales. Think of the commission difference between a book and a car...it's a no-brainer.
You can always go to COMMUNITY and find the area that you have stuff to sell in and ask others how sales are going.
